Young Indian Opener Shubman Gill Opens Up About Facing Quality Pakistan Bowling

Young Indian opener Shubman Gill opened up about his experience playing against quality Pakistan pace bowling in the ongoing Asia Cup 2023. Shubman Gill pointed out that the lack of exposure to quality Pakistani bowling has been a challenge for the Indian team.

Indian top-order batters struggled against Pakistan pacers, collapsing to 66/4 in their first match of the continental tournament in Pallekele. However, the Men in Blue recovered and managed to score 266 runs. The pace bowlers took all 10 wickets in India’s innings.

They Have A Quality Bowling Attack – Shubman Gill

Speaking to reporters in the pre-match press conference, Shubman Gill emphasized that Pakistan’s potent bowling attack can make a difference when players are not accustomed to facing it.

  • When you are playing at this level, you play left-armer pacers previously at some point of your career
  • We do not play Pakistan that much as compared to the other sides. They have a quality bowling attack. When you do not face such a bowling attack frequently and are not used to it, it makes a difference

Shubman Gill played with a defensive approach in the match against Pakistan, taking 10 balls to open his account. He scored 10 runs off 32 balls before being bowled through the bat and pad gap by the tearaway pacer, Haris Rauf.

Rohit Sharma Takes On Bowlers Aerially – Shubman Gill

The 24-year-old highlighted the contrasting styles of himself and his opening partner, Rohit Sharma, which could make it challenging for bowlers to contain them.

  • I am someone who likes to play along the ground in the powerplay. Rohit takes on bowlers aerially. This combination works well for us. How different we are as players makes it difficult for bowlers to contain us

It Is Just About The Bowlers – Shubman Gill

Shubman Gill discussed a brief slump in his form following the IPL 2023, emphasizing that it’s not always about technique but also about the quality of the bowling.

  • Yes you go back to the good times (during a slump). Sometimes it is not even about technique. It is just about the bowlers, they are also there to take wickets. You can get some good deliveries. When you play well, there are things that go in your favour. You just have to trust your game and keep going to get those big runs

The Rohit Sharma-led team will take on the Babar Azam-led team in their first Super Four stage match at the R. Premadasa Stadium in Colombo on Sunday, September 10.
