Unavailability of KL Rahul in Asia Cup Matches
KL Rahul will not be able to play in the group-stage matches against Pakistan and Nepal in the Pallekele leg of India’s Asia Cup campaign. The wicketkeeper-batter is still recovering from an injury and has been ruled out of the upcoming games.
Working towards Full Fitness
Rahul will remain at Bengaluru’s National Cricket Academy (NCA) and continue working with the physios in order to be fully fit for the Super Four stage of the competition. A fitness assessment will be conducted on September 4 to determine his availability for the later part of the tour.
Coach Dravid’s Perspective
Head coach Rahul Dravid expressed that while Rahul’s absence is a setback, the team management views it as only missing out on two games. Dravid stated, “He is batting really well, he’s keeping… well, he is doing everything. It’s just a slightly more cautious approach with him leading into the World Cup.”
- Rahul has been progressing well according to Coach Dravid.
- He will have match simulations to get more game time.
- Dravid is confident about Rahul’s availability for the later part of the tour.
Implications for the World Cup
Rahul’s absence during the Asia Cup raises concerns about his participation in the upcoming World Cup. The selectors plan to finalize the World Cup squad after India’s second match in the Asia Cup, with a September 5 deadline set by the ICC.
Rahul’s Batting Form in Training
During the recent training camp in Alur, Rahul displayed excellent batting form. He faced spin and pace bowlers, showcasing his skills and technique.
- He used his feet well against legspinners.
- He played sweeps against left-arm spinners.
- Rahul’s focus was on alignment and playing straight against pacers.
After the session, Rahul had a discussion with Coach Dravid and Captain Virat Kohli.
Wicketkeeping Alternatives
In Rahul’s absence, Ishan Kishan will handle the wicketkeeping duties in the Asia Cup matches. Sanju Samson has been named as the travelling reserve.
