ICC World Cup 2023: Mitchell Marsh in contention to open innings for Australia in World Cup

ICC World Cup 2023 is keeping everyone on its toes even though the tournament hasn’t started yet. The excitement is getting doubled up as each day passes by. The cricket extravaganza will take place in India from 5th October and the final is all set to take place on 19th November. The tournament will open with a blockbuster clash between England and New Zealand.

Australia’s Chance at the World Cup

Australia will be one of the hot favourites to win the ICC World Cup 2023. With the way they are performing and the kind of team they have, it’s fair to say that they will be the biggest threat for any team in the tournament, slated to take place in October-November.

  • Mitchell Marsh’s success in ODI and T20I series

Mitchell Marsh also opened in the ODI series against Australia earlier this year and he was the standout performer. He smashed 2 fifties in 3 matches, striking at 131.08. He also showed great signs of form in the T20I series against South Africa, hammering 186 runs in the three-game series while striking at 186 with a best of 92*.

Australian cricket team’s batting coach Michael di Venuto hinted about the possibility of Mitchell Marsh opening the innings. He explained:

“There’s lots of options for us moving forward (for) opening the batting. You look at the World Cup – David Warner comes back into the mix, Mitch Marsh, Travis Head, they’ve all got good form recently, they can all put a case forward to open the batting at the World Cup. Tonight Trav was really good, he stood a lot stiller and reacted the ball really well to the ball. He can hit all around the grounds.”
