The Quest for Gold: Asian Games 2023

The quest for Gold at the Asian Games 2023 for the Indian side will begin in Hangzhou, China, on the 5th October for the men’s team, while the women’s team will start their journey on the 22nd of this month. However, before that, both the men’s and women’s teams will be involved in their respective camps that will take place in Bengaluru.

Men’s Team Camp

The men’s camp will be a two-week affair, which will see daylight on 12th September and will conclude on 24th under the guidance of coach VVS Laxman, as Ruturaj Gaikwad will be the skipper of the side. The men’s tournament will happen from 28th September till 8th October, with the Indian team directly seeded into the Quarterfinals.

Women’s Team Camp

On the other hand, the women’s side will be involved in a shorter camp that will only last for four days, beginning on 13th September and lasting till 16th due to their early departure to China. Coach Hrishikesh Kanitkar will ensure that they are fully prepared for the multilateral event, with skipper Harmanpreet Kaur continuing her leadership duties.

Valuable Camp Experience

“This camp will be valuable for many players who will be gaining experience in a multi-sport competition like the Asian Games,” a source familiar to the situation said.

Tournament Format

Like the men’s team, the women’s team will also start their campaign from the quarterfinal stage, with their first match scheduled on the 22nd of September and final on the 28th.

Cricket Field and Accommodation Challenges

All the matches will take place in the T20 format at the Zhejiang University of Technology Pingfeng Cricket Field. Adding to this, there are reports that additional players and support staff members might not travel with the team due to the tighter regulations on the number of athletes that could be accommodated in the Games Village.

Previously, the women’s team in the Birmingham Commonwealth Games 2022 had a few problems with player accommodation as the extra members had to be transferred to private hotels, and even then, the interaction was quite difficult with the main team.
