Gadar 2 box office collection Day 33: Sunny Deol’s film sees a gradual decline after Jawan’s release
The weekday curse
The weekday curse has finally hit Sunny Deol and his film Gadar 2. After ruling the box office successfully for a month, the film’s numbers saw a decline after Jawan released on September 7. And now as the weekend got over, the film saw a further slump.
According to industry tracker Sacnilk, the film earned Rs 75 lakh on Monday, and saw a further dip on Tuesday, as it minted approx Rs 50 lakh. This brings its 33-day total to Rs 516.08 crore.
Fierce competition from Shah Rukh Khan’s Jawan
The Anil Sharma war drama created quite a rage at the box office, breaking many records when it hit cinema halls on August 11. However, in its fifth week, the sequel of the 2001 blockbuster Gadar is encountering fierce competition from Shah Rukh Khan’s actioner, which is rewriting box office history.
- Gadar 2 opened with a massive Rs 40 crore and collected Rs 284.63 crore in just a week.
- The numbers for the following week were Rs 134.47 crore, Rs 63.35 crore, and Rs 27.55 crore, respectively.
Slipping down the ranks
Following the release of Jawan, the Sunny Deol film also slipped from the second position to the third spot in the list of the highest Hindi openers of 2023. Jawan now leads the pack with Rs 75 crore, followed by Pathaan at Rs 57 crore, and then Gadar 2. As the numbers decline further now, it’s unlikely that the Sunny Deol-starrer will manage to cross Pathaan’s all-time record of Rs 543 crore.
Naseeruddin Shah’s criticism
Acclaimed actor Naseeruddin Shah recently opened up about the popularity of “jingoistic” films like The Kashmir Files, The Kerala Story and Gadar 2, calling it “harmful”. He also shared how filmmakers are made to make movies that bring down “other communities” unnecessarily.
While speaking to Free Press Journal, Naseeruddin was asked if the objective of filmmaking in Bollywood has changed. He responded, “Now the more jingoist you are, the more popular you become, because this is what has been ruling this country. It’s not enough to love your country but beat drums about it and you have to create imaginary enemies.”
Naseeruddin Shah pointed out that filmmakers who are making these jingoistic films are not realizing “what they are doing is very harmful”. He added, “In fact, films like Kerala Story and Gadar 2, I haven’t seen them but I know what they are about. It’s disturbing that films like Kashmir Files are so massively popular whereas movies made by Sudhir Mishra, Anubhav Sinha, and Hansal Mehta, who are trying to portray the truth of their times don’t get seen.”
Gadar 2 cast
In Gadar 2, Sunny Deol and Ameesha Patel reprise their iconic roles of Tara and Sakeena. Helmed by Anil Sharma, the film also starred Utkarsh Sharma in a pivotal role.
